The use of pliers became expedient in engineering due to the quest for rigidity and quality assembling of parts. The major reason it has to be employed in disassembling or assembling of parts is to aid in holding a particular part in a fixed position, while the remaining part would be subjected to turning force for the purpose of loosing or tightening of the whole parts.

Pliers have a range of varieties depending on the purpose they were meant to serve, such as:
LONG NOSE PLIERS, popularly used in electrification jobs for cutting of wires and removal of the wire insulators during electrification jobs. This type of plier can also be very useful in the withdrawal of pins and small nails stocked in a wood. Also has the ability of punching holes in soft surfaces for the purpose of making joints, like softwoods joints.

ROUND NOSE PLIERS, the major function of this type of plier is for gripping of workpieces, the plier finds its major use in the process of assembling and disassembling of parts. The use of plier enables one part to be held at static position while the remaining part will be subjecting to a particular force such as pulling force, pushing force, or turning force, etc. a good example in the application of this type of plier is during the fixing of spokes in a bicycle tyre wheel, it will become impossible to fix the spoke without a part of the spoke being held with a plier for the nuts to easily enter the threads meant for the spokes.

INSTRUMENTATION PIPING PLIERS, they can be known by the round or circular hole in-between the two nose when they were closed together, such plier is usually meant for holding of small steel pipes use in the instrumentation jobs of pipelines, though the plier can be used for this purpose for small pipe diameters not more than 30mm, the wider range of pipe diameters can be controlled with pipe wrench.

BAR/ROD PLIERS, this type of plier finds its application in the civil engineering jobs, by description it has a longer length than other types of pliers, the two nose of the plier is usually designed like that of scissors. The plier can be used in the cutting of iron rods depending on the diameter and the malleable property of the rod. It can easily be used in cutting quarter rods use in the forming of beams for building pillars.

PICKING NOSE PLIERS, usually small with the short pointed nose, use for picking small objects such as bolts nuts. The model of this type of plier can be seen with technicians repairing electronics, laptops, desktops, mobile phones, etc. because it helps in performing minor jobs for stubborn parts which may require little strength to loose. An extension or similarity of this model of plier would look like one of the apparatus medical doctors use in the hospital during surgery for removal of faulty tissues from the body.



This process is simple, sometimes you would observe that your zip cannot close when you draw it to the direction it was meant to close. This is common in men trousers and travelling bags, the major reason for this can be as a result of little expansion at the base of the locking metal of the zip, the easier way to repair such situation in the case of emergency where changing of new zip is impossible, is to use plier and grip the upper and lower parts of the locking metal of the zip and make them come a bit closer by applying compressive force through the pliers. When this is properly done without breaking the locking metal, force it to go back at the beginning of the zip where it can start the locking and then draw it with little force, and notice how possible the zip would lock and close the bag.


Nuts usually go with a bolt, sometimes the nuts of our household appliances such as cooking stove get stocked due to the presence of liquids and long-term usage, this problem makes it had for a simple repair to be carried out in such appliances in the events of damage. Pliers stand as one of the best tools in the loosing of such nuts due to their gripping functions.


Pliers can be used in the process of forging metals due to their ability to reduce the effects of heat coming from the hot metal.


Pliers find their limitations in the following:

When they are used wrongly, an example using pliers as a hammer will damage the hinge and cause the two nose to start shaking after some time of using it.

The gripping teeth of the pliers usually sustain injury when excessive force is applied while holding a high rigid surface.

Pliers are not meant for the torque of bolts and nuts, using them for such purpose could endanger the user and can easily cause any of the handles to break.

When pliers are not used for a long time, the hinges usually get stocked making the pliers handle impossible to move. Therefore, it is necessary to apply grease to the hinge always especially when they are not in use.
