Car Engine Parts And Their Uses
There are so many terms in the car engine and our automobiles. They are constantly being used but most times we are unaware what of they mean.
we have all, at a particular time been in the kind of conversation where we have no response but to nod in affirmation when these terms are used.
This post contains some of the terms associated with the motor engine of automobiles and some general terms we must be aware of.
1. HORSEPOWER
This is a very common term, especially with sports cars.
It refers to the power an engine produces.
When the steam engine produced by James watt began to replace horses in the mines, the mathematical way to equate horse to engine power was figured out. Thus, the term horsepower was invented.
It is now expanded to include the output power of other types of piston engines, as well as turbines, electric motors, and other machinery.
1 horsepower(HP) is 735.5 watts
2. TORQUE
The torque of a car is the rotating force produced by an engine’s crankshaft.
It measures the twisting force or strength of an engine or motor and produces that sensation of being pushed back into your seat when you stomp on the accelerator.
Simply put, torque gets you going while horsepower keeps you moving.
3. CAR SUSPENSIONS
They prevent too many unwanted jerks when riding your car through bad roads.
It is the combination or system of tires, springs, shock absorbers, and linkages that connect the vehicle to the wheels.
They are the shock-absorbing component of the car and they help your tires stay in contact with the road by increasing tire friction.
They also prevent your car from bouncing up and down when driving through bumpy roads.
4. CAR VALVES
They are a part of the car engine responsible for letting in air and/or fuel into the cylinders to be combusted. These are known as intake valves.
Another type of valve responsible for letting the exhaust (The steam let out of a cylinder after it has done its work there) from combustion out of the cylinders is called exhaust valves.
5. CAR CYLINDERS
The car cylinder is the compartment where fuel (gasoline) is burned and converted into mechanical energy that lowers the vehicle.
Most cars are powered by 4 to 6 while trucks have 6 to 8
As the engine runs the car, the cylinder runs the engine.
Thus, this compartment of the motor engine is one of its most important structures.
6. THE CLUTCH
The clutch is a device that transfers the rotational power of the engines to the wheels.
It allows engine power to be applied gradually when a vehicle is starting and interrupts power to avoid gear crunching (a crunching or noisy crackling) when shifting.
Engaging the clutch allows power to transfer from the engine to the transmission and drive wheels.
It also transmits engine power to the gearbox and allows the transmission to be interrupted while a gear is being selected.
7. HYDRAULICS
In cars, hydraulics are important in the hydraulic braking system and also used in some cars for suspensions.
It is formed by two cylinders or more connected to a pipe filled with oil supplied by a pump.
In the braking system, they use brake fluid to transfer pressure into a braking pad which then stops the vehicle from moving.
As suspensions, they allow for dynamic adjustments in the height of the vehicle.
They are often placed in low riders.
8. GEARBOX
The gearbox is used to increase the torque of a vehicle.
It provides a selection of gears for different driving conditions such as when climbing a hill or cruising on a level surface.
The lower the gear, the slower the wheels turn about the engine speed.
Well, these are just a few of the terms used in an engine but it is definitely enough to keep you in any conversations about automobiles.
