The Enigma machine is one of the special machines made by the German military during WW2 for the sole purpose of passing secret messages and classified information. The secret machine was built with lots of coding patterns to make it possible to secure the information channels through the machine.

It actually fulfilled its intended purpose by helping top-ranking military officials share vital messages secretly without being decoded by rivals. The usefulness of the machine lasted till Alan Turing and his team discovered the code and cracked it. Alan Turing is an English mathematician who worked tirelessly with a team to discover and crack the codes.

Discovering the code means finding out the working principles of the machine and decoding how it could be controlled and alter certain operations in the machine.

The recent X-ray radiographs of the coding device in the machine taken by the University of Manchester revealed the interior of the vital part of the machine showing its basic parts and the possible functions they are playing in the machine.

The uniqueness of the machine could not allow the researchers to dismantle it to avoid possible damage to parts rather unique pictures of the internal parts were obtained through X-rays.

According to Massimo @Rainmaker1973, “there were over 158,962,555,217,826,360,000 combinations to the Enigma Machine, regarding the codes it could use for messages. Yet, Alan Turing’s Bombe machine, through trial & error, was able to decode messages sent by Germans in 20 minutes”.

However, another machine known as Cipher Machine 41, was invented by Fritz Menzer who was known for developing machines then after it was discovered that the secret codes of the Enigma Machine used then by the Nazi German military had been cracked by Alan Turing and his team. Fritz also worked on cryptanalysis machines.

Below is a simple video demonstration of the machine including the replacement made after its code was cracked. Tell us what you think in the comment section.
