If you are a wordpress and intend securing your website against hack and spams, there are many plugins meant for that purpose and among them, wordfence, and wassup are popular including Akismet but the use of these plugins could turn out to be harmful to your website if you do not take time to understand their working principles and major areas of their functionality.
As a matter of fact, it is very necessary to consider the review of any plugin you may wish to install in your website, because most times the review reveals about 70% facts about any plugin in wordpress. The plugin suitable for personal may not function properly in public and multi-sites.
Recent case study revealed the damage encountered while trying to use Akismet as indicator, wordfence as an anti-virus and wassup for statistics and hackers identifier, all in a single multi-site having buddypress in it. The reported successful operation for few months of installation of all these plugins, to his amazement and the surprise of the site users that they all woke up one day and find out that the entire site content is gone. Though this sounds funny in write up but it could cause serious heartbreak to any who has no knowledge of such incident in the past, especially if the site has started generating very large number of visitors per day.
According to the report, some of the encountered in these plugins combination are:
Blank content in any of the website url
404 page errors
Half loading of site content
Login out of everyone using the website and deleting of their account at any slightest attack of virus or hacking
Login out of the website administrator and deleting of his account
Disappearance of most of other installed plugins
And other minor errors noticed while trying to fix the website.
Though, the website contents disappeared; it does not mean they were deleted from the server rather most of the plugin supports articles referred to the httacess file in the website domain through the “://public_html/domain” directory but most servers hide it by default for security reasons, you may see this file by re-setting your file manager to reveal hidden files at the upper right site of the file manager beside the search box.
The starting point of addressing this type of issue caused by these plugins are by deactivating all of them, and inserted a code into the httaccess file in the file manager, this code can be issued by any php code expert in the web.
However, in incident like this, quick recovering may not be guaranteed except you understand the php codes very well and know how to manipulate the codes if not it is better to leave it with professionals to avoid losing your entire site contents in the server or creating more technical problems that may keep your site offline for a long time.
