What is a Gasket?

Steps To Renew A Leaking Engine Gasket: engine gasket

Gaskets are often used between metal surfaces to make an oil-tight joint. If the gasket is displaced or damaged, or the metal surfaces are distorted, the oil will leak.

The gaskets most likely to leak are those that are frequently disturbed, such as the one under the valve cover which has its oil-tight seal broken each time the valve settings are checked. Ideally, a new gasket should be fitted each time the cover is taken off.

Which Gasket is more complex and leaks easily?

The most complex gasket in the engine is between the cylinder head and block. The cylinder head gasket has the difficult job of sealing off combustion gases, water in the cooling system, and high-pressure lubricating oil.

If it leaks, the cylinder head must come off, such as a complicated job that is best left to the experts.

Here are the nine steps to renew a leaking engine gasket:

  1. Remove all the fixtures, cords, and hose overhanging the valve cover. In other words, move away from the air cleaner, spark plug cables, and any hoses standing as an obstruction.
  2. Remove all those auxiliary parts attached to the valve cover which is obstructing your access to the required part. After that, lose the cover with the required spanner.
  3. After losing the cover, remove the gasket by peeling it off from the metal surface. Cork gaskets may be positioned by the shaping of the cover flange, extensions on the gasket may engage with cut-outs in the flange, or the gasket may be stuck with a jointing compound.
  4. Clean all traces of the old gasket from the flange and the mating surfaces.
  5. Many oil leaks are caused by over-tightening the fixing bolts or screws and distorting the cover. Resting the bent flange on a hardwood block and gently tapping it with a light hammer will straighten out the distortions.
  6. Slight imperfections can be sealed using a silicone sealant on the surface before fitting the new gasket.
  7. If a cork gasket is distorted soak it in warm water to regain its shape.
  8. With the gasket attached, place the valve cover carefully in position on the cylinder head. Use a mirror to check hidden areas, in case the gasket has slipped out of position.
  9. Refit the cover screws or bolts with any sealing washers. If damaged washers are fitted, the oil will seep out.
  10. Using new washers, tighten the bolts sufficiently to just compress the gasket. Refit any components that you have removed, start the engine, and check all around the gasket for leaks. Small leaks can be cured by parting the joint and applying silicone sealant.
